100Mb fibre broadband service launched by Virgin Media
27 Oct 2010 | 17.51 Europe/London
From today Virgin Media broadband customers can pre-register for its 100Mb service, the fastest residential service in the country, which will launch in December.
The new service will be available at first in London, the south east and parts of Yorkshire and will be rolled out to 12m homes by the middle of next year.
In addition to providing up to 100Mbp/s downloads, the new service will give upload speeds of ‘up to’ 10Mbp/s which the company claims, in trials, has since a large increase in users sending large files, such as video, which they may have been put off uploading to the web or emailing to friends in the past.
The Prime Minster, David Cameron, welcomed the new service in a statement: "We want to see super-fast broadband brought to people's homes and businesses right across the country and this exciting news takes us a step closer towards reaching that goal."
Neil Berkett, chief executive officer at Virgin Media said: “The launch of our 100Mb service is a significant milestone in the UK’s broadband evolution and a vivid illustration of the power of our next generation network. From establishing the UK’s first ever broadband service in 2000 to the launch of 100Mb in 2010, in the space of just ten years, Virgin Media has led the greatest developments in digital Britain. The world of possibilities that broadband will enable is set to explode and we’re excited about the innovations we can bring to consumers in the next decade.”
The 100Mb service is expected to cost £45 per month on its own or £35 per month as part of a bundle from Virgin Media.
