Avanti Satellite Broadband £15/month ?

05 May 2009 | 09.04 Europe/London
With the upcoming launch of their new HYLAS satellite Avanti are promoting satellite broadband as the solution to a universal broadband service. In a Daily Mail article a price point of £15/month is suggested which is well below the £47/month for a 2M/512k service with 15 GB download offered by Avanti via the Scottish Government's "Broadband Reach" notspot programme.

Avanti have a tradition of providing shared satellite links via wireless where this is appropriate for a group of customers, which will also help reduce the cost per user. The Scottish scheme has no setup or installation fees but is subsidised, which may or may not be the case for the Digital Britain" USO if and when it is finally defined. So far 1,500 customers have been connected  under the Broadband Reach scheme with a further 600 orders placed.

HYLAS is designed as a low cost platform and may well be substantially cheaper than the capacity Avanti currently lease on other satellites. It will be the first European owned high power Ka band dedicated two-way DVB-RCS broadband satellite. Total capacity of the satellite is 300,000 connections.
