BBC Project Canvas Delay

07 Jun 2009 | 18.52 Europe/London
The BBC Trust has asked the BBC management to address a number of points raised in responses to the recent consultation on Project Canvas before proceeding to the next stage. This is a result of some responses accusing the BBC of arrogance, failing to provide adequate information, and so on.

The consultation documents make interesting reading, suggesting that the BBC had failed to engage effectively with the industry on what it was doing and why. Canvas seeks to define standards for IPTV and provide a common platform and user interface as part of a convergence of broadband and broadcasting. Part of its remit is to increase the takeup of broadband by integrating it into the delivery of digital TV services.

In the past the BBC has developed technologies and defined standards (Ceefax / Teletext fro example) which have gone on to be very succesful. There is however some question as to whether this is their role or would better be left to others. These tensions are increased because the tax funded BBC is effectively competing with, or trying to influence the behaviour of, a number of companies in the private sector.

Adoption of Project Canvas is certainly seen as driving a large increase in the demand for internet bandwidth, and hence to some extent relies on others to provide (and pay for) that bandwidth.
