Broadband speeds and access improving in EU

26 Nov 2010 | 11.18 Europe/London
Broadband speeds are improving in Europe, according to research undertaken for the European Commission.

For the twelve months running up to July 2010, the figures showed that 29% of broadband connections were capable of delivering downloads of 10Mbp/s, a 14% rise on the year on year figure. Similarly there was a modest rise in high speed connections from 23.9% of citizens, to 25.6%.

Over the same period fixed line broadband rose by 9m connections to reach 128m across the EU.

Nevertheless, the vice president for the digital agenda, Neelie Kroes, claims member states still need to do more to ensure that the European goals of every household having basic broadband by 2013 and super fast fibre broadband connections by 2020 are met.
