BT’s Home IT Support launch ‘Broadband Accelerator’ service

BT’s Home IT support service has added a new service to improve broadband speeds - the Broadband Accelerator.

The service, available here, is available only to those who take both a phone line and broadband from BT Retail (i.e. have BT Total Broadband).

For £90 an engineer will visit and spend up to one hour working to improve the connection speed of your modem to the telephone exchange. If the improvement is less than 0.5 Mbits/s the charge is refunded. The BT website states that the “process usually gives customers a speed increase of 1.0Mbps +”.

The techniques the engineers will use are well known in the broadband support forums and a knowledgeable user could implement them for less than £20 and an hour’s effort. However many users don’t have the time, knowledge or inclination and would be quite happy to spend the cost of a tankful of fuel on getting their broadband running at its full potential.

We welcome BT making this service available as the alternative for many is to try and convince their ISP there is a fault and then run the risk of BT Openreach charging a £169 fee if the fault proves to be the users equipment, filters or wiring. A more modest fee of £90 with a “no win no fee” clause on the speed could help many users solve in-house wiring and filtering problems.

Update: Having spoken to BT, it transpires that the service is available only to BT Broadband customers. Apologies for any confusion caused, the BT website does not make this clear.
