Next Generation Access down under

The Australian Government should shortly be receiving bids for a national "super fast" broadband network with a minimum speed of 12 Mbits/s reaching 98% of the population. The contract should be awarded next spring with work starting late next year with a 5 year rollout and is based on a Fibre to the Node (FTTN or FTTC) solution rather than fibre to the home.

The project will receive state funding to the tune of A$4.7bn (£2.0bn) with the bidders responsible for raising the balance. One of the bidders is a Canadian firm and there has been much posturing between the incumbent national telco Telstra and the Government about the future regulation of the network and whether they would bid or not.

There was no mention of a similar scheme for the UK in last week's pre-budget economic first aid package.
