Silver surfers dominate new UK web growth

30 Jun 2010 | 08.25 Europe/London
More than half of the new people to come on line in the past year are over 50 years old according to the latest research from internet audience measurement service UKOM/Nielsen.

Of the 1.9m new internet users, who swelled the overall numbers of surfers to 38.8m between May 2009 toMay 2010 (a 5% rise), 1m were over 50. Nearly three in four of the new, over 50 web users are male.

In total, it means that nearly one in three British surfers (31%) are now aged over 50.

In all other age groups there is a near even split between male and female web users, however with the over 50 age group men are more dominant and in the over 65 category two in three web users are male, leaving plenty of room for women over 50 and over 65 to provide further growth for the so called ‘silver surfer’ generation.
