Sky Tightens Broadband Allowances

04 Jul 2009 | 11.23 Europe/London
New users taking up Sky's Mid / Everyday package since June 22nd will have a bandwidth allowance of 10 GB per month, rather than the previous 40 GB.  Existing users will see the same change from 1st August or have the option to upgrade to Unlimited for an extra £5 per month.

The current Sky broadband LLU products have had some increases to maximum speeds :-
Base: up to 2Mb download / up to 400Kb upload
Everyday: up to 10Mb download / up to 600Kb upload
Unlimited: up to 20Mb download / up to 1.3Mb upload

Sky are also starting to move customers with both broadband and line rental/phone calls onto fully unbundled lines, rather than the traditional shared access (SMPF) LLU broadband with BT's wholesale line rental (WLR) product for calls and rental. This will make it slightly more complicated / expensive for customers to leave Sky should they wish to take one of the services from a third party. New terms and conditions are introduced to cover this change of service and there is an opt-out available to customers wishing to keep their line on BT exchange equipment. Subscribers to Sky Talk line & calls get their broadband at £5 per month less than those with separate phone provision.

So are Sky users going to be transfered onto the new speeds? Or will I have to ring them to sort this? Chris

Phil says:
The new speeds will be available immediately to new customers from Monday, June 22. Groups of existing customers will have their connections put through the line stabilisation process in a rolling process starting on Monday; it is anticipated that all existing lines will have been through the process by September. All existing customers will be emailed three days before their line is put through line stabilisation. Customers may log on to My Sky and check the information under Broadband Service Details for information on the current status of testing on their line; after line stabilisation testing has been completed, the maximum downstream and upstream speeds set on the line will be displayed.
