ThinkBroadband Slowspot / Notspot Survey
26 May 2009 | 10.36 Europe/London
ThinkBroadband have launched a survey at http://www.broadband-notspot.org.uk/ to collate information on locations without broadband (notspots) or with speeds below 2 Mbits/s (slowspots). A support forum and other tools such as their speedtester are available to help with diagnosis.
It will be interesting to see how TBB manage to sort out people with their own technical problems from genuine notspots, and how they handle the fact that a 2M link to the exchange may speedtest at 250 kbits/s every evening due to it being a shared service under heavy load. Either of these scenarios will lead to "fake notspots" which could create a misleading picture or lead to inappropriate corrective action.
We look forward to seeing how Lord Carter's final Digital Britain report will define its Broadband Universal Service and what it will regard as "affordable".
