USA to double mobile broadband spectrum in next decade
28 Jun 2010 | 13.55 Europe/London
The Obama administration has announced the radio spectrum available to mobile broadband providers will more than double over the next ten years.
The President is due to sign today a memorandum that will commit the Government to releasing 500Mhz of spectrum currently under federal or commercial control.
The move is aimed at raising much needed funds for the federal administration as well as giving mobile broadband suppliers new frequencies to supply mobile broadband services over. It had been feared that without such a release of new spectrum rising demand for mobile broadband and video streaming on the move service suppliers would not have been able to cope.
The plan to auction off new spectrum over the next decade will be positioned as aiding the USA economy’s recovery as well as enabling the administration to push broadband services beyond built up metropolitan areas so the National Broadband Plan can be delivered.
