Cable & Wireless

Cable and Wireless purchased Bulldog and their LLU network in 2004. This LLU network rapidly expanded and now encompasses some 800 exchanges, although
there has been very little expansion in 2007 and early 2008.
In 2006 Cable and Wireless sold the Bulldog userbase and brand to Pipex, but they retained the LLU network. An agreement between Cable and Wireless
and Pipex meant that existing Bulldog customers would retain their ADSL2+ services over the C&W network.
At present there is no very large ISP making use of the C&W LLU network, making it probably the most under-utilised large scale LLU network
(Bulldog were estimated to have around 80,000 customers when they were sold to Pipex - a relatively small number when compared to BT, Tiscali, TalkTalk and Sky).
However, in 2007 it was announced that Virgin Media would be using the C&W network to extend coverage of faster services beyond the bounds of their
own cable network. As of early 2008 this has yet to materialise, but is rumoured to be launching this summer.
Providers using the C&W LLU network to provide broadband connections:
- Bulldog - used by existing customers only (no new sales!)
- Pipex
- A handful of business providers, including Fluidata and Fusion Media Network
